Blossoming into Beauty

I was recently traveling with some girlfriends and as we drove through the vast West Texas openness, we passed several beautiful sunflower fields. As we admired the endless yellow horizon a thought crossed my mind, “To think this lovely plant was at one time a weed; a wild flower; maybe even a nuisance…Amazing.”
The sunflower, of course, was not always a “cash crop.” It took someone to see the potential in it. A weed by definition is “a plant out of place.” Sound familiar? Out of place…interesting. At some point, a farmer saw favor in this beautiful flower and thought, “I could use this. I can cultivate it from this rough form and make into something substantial.” And oh my, is it ever useful! The sunflower plant is one of few plants that can be entirely utilized for something. Think about it. Sunflowers produce seeds, flour, oil, dye, medicinal remedies, skin care products; they are used for decorative purposes and the stems can even be dried and used for building materials. I’m sure there’s plenty more! So isn’t it amazing to think that for a time this wonderful plant sat unused. It was just a plant out of place.
Now, I know this story of the sunflower’s redemption could sound a little funny in comparison but hasn’t God done what that ancient farmer did? He looked down and saw this person out of place; a little wild and in need of care, but just full of potential. Did you ever think YOU are favored by God? Did you ever think there is something inside of you waiting to be birthed? The promise of God is that He has big plans for us, plans for good and not for evil, plans to give us a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11). If we allow God to work in us and cultivate us a little (or a lot) there is unlimited potential! You have been plucked up from where you were and set aside for a special work. When you invited Jesus into your life He bestowed a holy calling upon you to testify of His great works in your life. Begin to walk in your calling! John 12:23 says, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified…” Let us glorify Him and be used by Him. You may feel like you aren’t ready to be used; that you’re not ready to “testify.” Maybe you feel like God is still working on you. Take heart in knowing that God is still working on ALL of us. There is no better time than NOW. We sometimes get held back by thoughts of being unqualified for God’s calling. There can be many roots to these feelings but the only thing you need to know is that you ARE deserving of all the blessings God has set aside for you. You are favored. You are called. You are forgiven. But most importantly, God’s favor is limitless. No matter what you suffer through, you’re salvation cannot be taken away. You are righteous. Galatians 2:21 says, “I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.” You are made righteous through Jesus who lives inside you. Your righteousness has been taken care of, now go to work! The harvest is ready!

  1. Now any time I’m feeling a little ‘weedy’ I just need to realize that I might be ‘out of place’. Great post!!!!
