To help promote our Awaken Women’s Retreat for 2014, we are going to be posting the speaker profiles for each of our Awaken Breakout Speakers on our blog for the next several weeks. If you’d like more information on our Awaken Women’s Retreat, you can check out the Awaken 2014 tab on our main page or visit our Awaken Facebook page.
Our third speaker for 2014 is Perla Garner.
Perla and her husband, Quinn, attend New Life Fellowship in Seminole, Texas. The Garners are expecting their first child in early 2015 and they also have a yellow lab named Lady.
Perla is teaching a breakout session for our young women (high school and college) called “It Only Takes One.” The description for her class is “Stand up for what you believe. Be the light in a dark place. Show others the love of God. Want to make a difference in this world? Come and discover how God can use you today, right where you are.”
We asked Perla some questions about her class and herself and this is what she had to say.
AW: Perla, you’re teaching a class that’s directed at high school and college-age young women. Why do you think it’s important for them to hear a message that is completely tailored just for them?
PG: I believe that girls will connect more when a message is directed just for them and they can hear someone else that went through the same stuff during the years of many decisions.
AW: Your message will be about “standing up for what you believe” and “being a light in a dark place,” why do you feel this topic is important to young women?
PG: Because I feel that many times it’s just easier to blend in with the world and forget about the calling that God has placed in our lives. I would like to remind the young women that God has them at the right place at the right time to be a difference to this generation and not blend in with the customs of this world!
AW: What is your favorite scripture?
PG: Joshua 1:9, “This is my command–be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
AW: Have you been a breakout speaker at other Awaken retreats and if so, what was/were your topic(s)?
PG: I also spoke last year at Awaken and my topic was “Chosen for such a time as this.”
AW: Perla, why do you think it’s important to have the breakout sessions at Awaken?
PG: I think it’s important because people relate to your stories and they get so encouraged and recharged from the things the ladies are sharing!!
Thank you, Perla! We look forward to your class in October!! 🙂
