Stacy Havens: Learning to Relinquish Control

To help promote our Awaken Women’s Retreat for 2014, we are going to be posting the speaker profiles for each of our Awaken Breakout Speakers on our blog for the next several weeks.  If you’d like more information on our Awaken Women’s Retreat, you can check out the Awaken 2014 tab on our main page or visit our Awaken Facebook page.

Our fifth speaker for 2014 is Stacy Havens.

Stacy and her husband, Warren live in Lubbock, Texas and attend Faith Christian Family Church.  They have nine children, eight sons and one daughter, two daughters-in-law and one “good ‘ole dog we call Snoopy.”

Stacy is teaching a breakout session titled, “Learning to Relinquish Control.”  The description of her class is as follows: “Many of us have a need to control every aspect of our life.  This leaves us weary and spent and is a burden we were not meant to carry.  Discover freedom through the One who holds all things together.”

We asked Stacy some questions on her session and herself and this is what she had to say.

AW: Stacy, you’re speaking on the topic of “control” at Awaken.  Without giving away too much of your message, how does relinquishing control affect your daily life?

SH: Every day, and on some days many times a day, the Holy Spirit reminds me that my illusion of being in control is just that, an illusion.  The Word says that “He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

AW: Why do you feel this topic is important to women?

SH: As women we often feel the responsibility to “hold it all together.” Many times, factors like wounds from the past and personality types can magnify our need to be in control.  We pick up and carry this burden, which causes us to walk through life in a crippled state, bent over, weary and spent.  We exhaust our energy carrying a weight that we were never meant to carry.

AW: What do you hope women will take away from your class?

SH: By hearing my story and seeing what God has done in me, I hope that women who struggle with control issues will come away from our time together with a fresh awareness of His goodness and the depths of His love for each of His daughters.

AW: Stacy, do you have a favorite scripture?

SH: One of my favorites is Psalm 46:10, “Let be and be still, and know (recognize and understand) that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations! I will be exalted in the earth!”

AW: How many years have you attended Awaken and have you taught a breakout session each year?

SH: I have attended Awaken for four years and been a breakout speaker for two of those years.

AW: What other topics have you spoken about in the past?

SH: I have covered topics on parenting.

AW: Why do you think it’s important to have breakout sessions at Awaken?

SH: I think the breakout sessions are so important because they are smaller, more personal groups of women who, for whatever reasons, identify with each other.  I find great encouragement from sitting under the teachers of my chosen session, seeing how God has brought them through an area where I may be currently walking.

AW: Is there anything else about your topic or class that you’d like to share with the ladies?

SH: One of the songs on the new Casting Crowns CD, “Thrive” has been used by God as a healing balm for this girl’s heart:

“Hold it all together, everybody needs you strong// When you’re tired of fighting, chained by your control// There’s freedom in surrender//  I’m on the throne.  Stop holding on and just be held…”

My prayer for each lady who attends this class is that the words of this song will become a reality for them.  May each of us who have been chained by our need to control find that when we let go, we are going to fall right into the arms of Jesus.  There is no better place to be!

Thank you, Stacy!  We look forward to the message you’re going to share with us! 🙂

Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]– (‭Ephesians‬ ‭3‬:‭20‬ AMP)
